Medical-Grade Skincare vs. Drugstore Skincare

What Are You Actually Paying For?

Walk into any drugstore, beauty retailer, or scroll through social media and you'll find thousands of skincare products promising brighter, smoother, younger-looking skin.

Some cost $15. Others cost $150.

So what exactly are you paying for when you invest in medical-grade skincare, and is the more expensive product always better?

The short answer: not necessarily.

At On Brand Aesthetics, we're not here to convince you that everything in your bathroom needs to be expensive. There are absolutely drugstore products that can play a role in a great skincare routine.

What matters most is what's inside the product, how it's formulated, whether there's evidence behind it, and whether it's actually appropriate for your skin.

Let's break it down.

First: What Does "Medical-Grade" Skincare Actually Mean?

Here's something that might surprise you: "medical-grade" isn't an official FDA classification for skincare.

It's a term commonly used within the aesthetics and dermatology industries to describe professional skincare lines that are often sold through medical or licensed skincare practices and tend to place a strong emphasis on research, formulation, ingredient selection, and professional guidance.

That's an important distinction.

We don't recommend a product simply because it has "medical-grade" attached to it. We care about the science behind the formula and whether it makes sense for the person sitting in front of us.

It's Not Just About the Ingredient List

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that two products containing the same ingredient are essentially the same.

For example, you might see vitamin C, retinol, peptides, or hyaluronic acid listed on products at dramatically different price points.

So why pay more?

Because an ingredient list only tells part of the story.

The effectiveness of a skincare product can depend on factors such as:

  • The form of the active ingredient

  • Its concentration

  • The stability of the formulation

  • The product's pH

  • How ingredients interact with one another

  • Packaging and protection from light or air

  • How the formula delivers ingredients to the skin

  • Whether the finished formulation has been tested

In other words, having a great ingredient on the label doesn't automatically mean it's being used in the most effective way.

Formulation Matters

Think of skincare a little like a recipe.

Two people can start with the same ingredients and end up with completely different results.

The same concept applies to skincare formulation.

Professional skincare companies may invest heavily in determining which forms and combinations of ingredients work well together while maintaining stability and tolerability.

This is one of the reasons we carry Revision Skincare® at On Brand.

Revision doesn't simply focus on individual "hero ingredients." Its products are formulated as complete systems, allowing us to combine products strategically depending on someone's skin type, concerns, tolerance, and goals.

That's also why we're big believers that you do not need a 12-step skincare routine to have great skin.

We would rather see you consistently use a few well-selected products than own a bathroom full of products that don't complement one another.

What About "Delivery Systems"?

You've probably heard skincare brands talk about ingredient delivery, but what does that actually mean?

Your skin is designed to act as a barrier. That's a very good thing.

But it also means simply putting an ingredient on the surface of your skin doesn't guarantee that it will interact with the skin in the way intended.

Formulation technology can influence an ingredient's stability, availability, release, and interaction with the skin.

This becomes particularly important with active ingredients.

A well-designed formulation isn't simply about putting the highest possible percentage of an ingredient into a bottle. More isn't always better.

Sometimes the better product is the one that delivers an effective formulation while remaining tolerable enough for you to actually use consistently. Because the world's most impressive skincare routine isn't doing anything sitting unopened in your medicine cabinet.

Clinical Testing Matters, Too

Another area where professional skincare brands may differentiate themselves is the amount of research performed on their products and formulations.

There is a difference between research showing that an individual ingredient can benefit the skin and testing the actual finished product containing that ingredient.

When evaluating skincare, we look for brands that take formulation and product testing seriously.

Revision Skincare has invested in clinical testing and research around many of its formulations, which is one reason it fits our philosophy at On Brand.

We want the products we recommend to have more behind them than good marketing.

Consistency Will Always Beat the "Perfect" Routine

Here's the part of skincare that isn't particularly glamorous:

You have to use it. Consistently.

A thoughtfully designed routine used every day will almost always make more sense than constantly switching products based on the newest TikTok trend.

Your skincare also doesn't need to change every time a new product launches.

Depending on your concerns, a strong routine may be surprisingly simple:

Cleanse. Treat. Moisturize. Protect.

Then we can strategically add products based on what we're actually trying to accomplish.

For one person, that may mean focusing on hydration and barrier support.

For another, it may mean pigmentation.

Someone else may be concerned with fine lines, texture, acne, redness, or overall skin quality.

That's where professional guidance becomes valuable.

What You're Really Paying For:
Someone to Help You Navigate It

There are thousands of skincare products available.

The problem isn't access anymore.

It's figuring out what you actually need.

One of the biggest benefits of purchasing skincare through a professional isn't simply getting access to a particular bottle. It's having someone help you build a routine around your skin.

At On Brand, we can help determine:

  • Which concerns should be prioritized

  • Which active ingredients make sense for your goals

  • Which products can be used together

  • How and when to introduce stronger products

  • What should be used in the morning versus evening

  • When your routine should change around aesthetic treatments

  • Which products you probably don't need

And sometimes our recommendation may be to keep something you're already using.

The goal isn't to replace every product you own.

The goal is to make your routine make sense.

Where Revision Skincare Fits Into Our Philosophy

We chose Revision Skincare because the brand aligns with the way we approach aesthetics at On Brand: thoughtful, evidence-informed, individualized, and focused on long-term skin quality.

Depending on your skin and goals, your routine may include products such as a Revision cleanser, C+ Correcting Complex®, D·E·J Daily Boosting Serum®, D·E·J Face Cream®, Retinol Complete®, Nectifirm® ADVANCED, HA+ Hydrating Serum, or an Intellishade® sunscreen.

But here's the important part: You probably don't need all of them.

Your best routine is the one built specifically around your skin.

That's why we love being able to "cocktail" and layer different Revision products strategically rather than handing everyone the exact same regimen.

So… Is Drugstore Skincare Bad?

Absolutely not. There are good drugstore products, mediocre professional products, and everything in between. Price alone does not determine whether something is effective.

Instead of asking:

"Is medical-grade skincare better than drugstore skincare?"

We'd encourage you to ask:

"Is this product well-formulated, supported by evidence, appropriate for my skin, and helping me reach my goals?"

That's a much better conversation.

Invest in the Routine, NOT THE HYPE.

You don't need the most expensive skincare routine.

You don't need every trending active ingredient.

And you definitely don't need 12 steps morning and night.

You need the right products, used correctly and consistently.

Whether you're starting from scratch, trying to simplify an overflowing skincare cabinet, or ready to take your routine to the next level, we're happy to help you figure out what makes sense for your skin.

Because skincare shouldn't be about buying more.

It should be about choosing better, for you.

And taking care of your skin? That's always On Brand.
